‘Available until Jan’ – Gerrard hints star player could exit Rangers in next window
Steven Gerrard has said that Rangers are not “out of the woods” with regards to the future of striker Alfredo Morelos.
The prolific Colombian goalscorer has been linked with a move away this summer, but appears to be staying until at least January after the transfer window shut.
Morelos has scored 82 goals in 151 appearances for the Ibrox club, but Gerrard said that his long-term future at the club was still not secure.
“I’m a little, tiny bit more certain about Alfredo in the short term,” Gerrard said (via the The Scotsman).
“But are we out of the woods on that one? In Alfredo’s case, I have always been in the woods since day one here.
“And I think I will remain in the woods while Alfredo’s here. I just manage Alfredo from day to day, week to week. He’s available until January. I can’t predict the future beyond that. We are happy to have him here. We need him back at his top level in terms of his form and scoring goals in the short term. That’s my only priority right now.”
Difficult situation to manage
Morelos is an undoubtedly talented player and someone that can help Rangers this season, but Gerrard has clearly accepted that he needs other options at his disposal.
With Jermain Defoe and summer additions Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe, Rangers are better able to spread the goals across the team than in the past, with 13 different players hitting the mark this season already.
At his best Morelos is prolific, but his discipline is a concern, with the Colombian having picked up six red cards since arriving at Ibrox.
For now, Gerrard will be happy to use him to supplement his attack, but the chances of Morelos being at the club by next summer appear slim.
