‘Master coup’ – Exclusive: Pundit claims Ross Wilson has made Rangers transfer masterstroke
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has said that Rangers performed a “master coup” when signing Calvin Bassey this summer.
The 20-year-old left-back arrived for compensation from Leicester thought to be around £300,000 and he’s already made an impact at his new club.
He’s made seven appearances, including two starts in the Premiership, and showed he can be a solid stand-in for Borna Barisic.
We think he starts for Rangers in the Europa League game against Lech Poznan on Thursday.
Talking exclusively to Ibrox News McLeish said, “Yeah, he’ll be happy to get his first action at the top level and he’s slotted in remarkably well at the left-back position.
“I remember my debut, I was absolutely bricking it. I just thought, ‘do what you can do and listen to the senior players around you’, and that’s what Bassey will be doing.
“That’s what the recruitment guys are there for. It’s a new system over the last 10-12 years, the chief scout with his army of people and the sporting director [Ross Wilson].
“He’ll have a database and he’ll be ready to snap up top players without spending huge amounts of money.
“For Rangers to get Bassey in from England is a master coup. Rangers deserve real credit for the transfer.”
Rangers have snapped up a few real bargains recently, with Bassey being the latest.
Glen Kamara is another after the Finland international joined for a rock-bottom price of just £50,000.
He is worth many, many multiples of that price now.
