‘I just want to play games’ – Free agent linked with Rangers delivers update on his future

Reported Rangers target Jack Wilshere has given an update on his future after leaving West Ham United this summer.

The former Arsenal man has had his career cruelly impacted by injury, managing just 16 Premier League appearances over the past two seasons.

Now available as a free agent, the former England international has been linked with the Ibrox club and confirmed that he is yet to make a decision over his future.

“I’ve been speaking to my agent every couple of days,” he told Sky Sports.

“There’s been a few things that have come up and we’re still talking about it, but I’m not going to put a time on it because I want to make sure it’s right.”

The 28-year-old added that he was “open to pretty much anything”.

“I want to play for a club where I feel like I’m an important part of it,” he said.

“I just want to play games – I want to get back to playing 25-30 games a season, when you can really get your confidence back and a smile on your face. Just playing football, what I used to do when I was a little bit younger. I still feel like I can do it and I want to prove everyone wrong.”

Risk vs reward

Jack Wilshere is undoubtedly a hugely talented player when at his best, but injury has meant that his best has been seen rather infrequently.

With just 16 appearances in the Premier League for West Ham over the past two years, the ex Arsenal man is not someone that Rangers can rely upon for a full season.

Whether a change of scenery will allow him to move past his injury problems or not is difficult to determine, but the club must understand the level of risk they would be taking on by signing him.

Wilshere also has to make the decision himself, and did not rule out a move to MLS, while also expressing his interest in a move to Spain, Germany or Italy.

His wages could well be a stumbling block but even if he were prepared to come to Ibrox, we’re not convinced the Premiership is the right place for him with his track record.
