Steve Lomas: This Rangers star helps Gerrard avoid ‘catastrophic’ Ibrox headache

Steve Lomas has claimed Jermain Defoe will believe he is Rangers’ best striker after his inclusion against Livingston.

The former teammate of the veteran forward has claimed the strength in depth helps Steven Gerrard avoid the catastrophic problem of Alfredo Morelos being injured.

The Colombian has struggled recently, and Defoe made a great impact on Sunday, scoring the second goal in a 2-0 win.

Lomas believes that Morelos being injured years ago would have created a huge problem at Ibrox, but not anymore.

“Jermain won’t want to settle just for that and he’ll think he’s the best striker at the club,” he told the Daily Record.

“If he played 30 games then Jermain would back himself to score 20 goals but even if gets you 10 in 20 appearances then that’s invaluable.

“It allows Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten to be rotated and they haven’t had that luxury for a long time.

“And if Morelos picked up an injury then you’ve got Defoe to come in whereas in the last couple of years if Morelos was out it would have been catastrophic.”

Rangers have a number of options available to them in the final third at Ibrox this season, with Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe joining over the summer.

Itten did score twice against Motherwell but has had little impact outside of that game, but other players have stepped up when needed.

Previously, Morelos was untouchable in Glasgow and you couldn’t imagine him being dropped by Gerrard, something that has changed this season.

Defoe has valuable experience and will be helping each of his teammates, and after scoring his 300th goal, he has more than proven himself.

The Europa League game with Lech Poznan is another opportunity for another striker, and we suspect that Roofe could get the chance after his goal against Liege.
