Ibrox Exclusive: Pundit hails ‘spectacular’ moment from Rangers star in 2-0 win v Livingston

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has hailed Jermain Defoe after his wonder goal against Livingston on Sunday.

Rangers won 2-0, heaping even more pressure on Celtic who could only manage a 3-3 draw with Aberdeen.

It sees Rangers with a six-point lead at the top of the premiership and that could become nine if Rangers beat Killie on Sunday.

Talking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said that Defoe might be losing some movement but that he still had it over the all-important five-metre burst.

“Well it was an amazing goal,” Mcleish said. “You talk about him being at a stage in his life where his legs are going a bit, but he can still move.

“He moved towards the ball, left the defender flat-footed, and he showed that he’s still got it over a five-metre burst.

“He’s such a fit guy. The way he walked it into the net, it was in his stride.

“It was a spectacular goal and you can add that to the Roofe one from the other day. I think Ibrox is a very happy place at the moment and Gerrard has real options up-front now.

“It’s not just about Alfredo Morelos anymore.”

Roofe’s wonder goal and now this sensational goal from Defoe – Morelos is being pushed for his starting place at Rangers at the moment.

Incredibly, this was Defoe’s 300th club goal in a wonderful career that’s seen him net for Spurs and England.

His goals could help deliver the first silverware of the Gerrard era.
