Gerrard warned about Rangers exit to potentially manage PL club in future

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has warned Rangers boss Steven Gerrard about potentially succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Gerrard has been linked to potentially taking the managerial job at Anfield for many years but he decided to take his first steps as a manager with Rangers.

Speaking to the Express, Gerrard’s former teammate said that while Gerrard is doing a good job at Ibrox, following Klopp at Liverpool ‘would not be good’.

He said, “I do not know who’ll replace Klopp, but I hope it won’t be a decision the club has to make any time soon, I believe Stevie (Gerrard) will manage the club one day, but to come in after Klopp immediately would not be good.

“Stevie is probably Liverpool’s best-ever player and he’ll always be remembered as that, but to come in after Klopp fans will want him to win things straight away and that’s not easy.

“I really like how Stevie works as a manager and things are going really well for him at Rangers, but it would be difficult to change the way Liverpool work again after Klopp and achieve success immediately”.

We have seen former players with limited managerial experience take over at their former club in the recent past. The most obvious example being Frank Lampard taking over at Chelsea despite only having one season in management with Derby County.

For a club, bringing back a successful player as a manager is a sure way to get the fans onside as it will always prove a popular appointment and whenever Klopp decides to leave Liverpool, the links with Gerrard will surely start.

While Gerrard has had more managerial experience than Lampard the Gers boss may not want to return to his former club if he doesn’t feel that he is ready. He will probably only get one shot at managing his boyhood club and he won’t want it to be a failure.

Though it does seem inevitable that Gerrard will end up in the dugout at Anfield at some point, Gers fans will be hoping that it is later rather than sooner, with it is looking increasingly likely that he will be the man to finally bring silverware back to Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, Gers fans are set to miss out as SPFL make plans to have some fans back at games in early November.
