Athletic journalist shares big update on Rangers player quarantine

New Rangers signing Bongani Zungu completed his period in self-isolation today (Tuesday) and can now finally train with his team-mates at Auchenhowie, according to Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell.

Writing via The Athletic’s app on Monday, Campbell reported that Zungu, 28, had been called up to the South Africa squad for the next international break and that his period in quarantine ended on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, Steven Gerrard confirmed that Zungu had to spend a period of time in self-isolation due to COVID-19 regulations.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Gerrard said that Zungu had been supplied with “gym equipment so he can train from home” during his time alone.

The South African midfielder arrived on loan from French side Amiens on transfer deadline day and could now make his debut this week in one of Rangers’ matches against either Lech Poznan or Kilmarnock.

However, as Zungu has barely kicked a ball in 2020, there’s a chance it will take him a bit longer to bed in at Ibrox.

Zungu played just two times for Amiens in their opening fixtures of this season and before taking to the field on September 26 for his first 2020/21 outing, his last appearance came against Marseille in March.

Zungu’s unlikely to be match fit and his period in self-isolation is only going to have made that worse.

He’ll need time to get fit, time to get used to his new surroundings, time to understand the Glaswegian accent and time to adapt to Gerrard’s tactics.

We’d be surprised if Zungu plays before the next international break, which starts next month after Rangers’ match against Hamilton on November 8.

In other Rangers news, fans want a lot of money for this midfielder after he was linked with what seems like half of the Premier League.
