‘So controlled’ – Sky Sports pundit delivers verdict on Rangers and 20/21 Premiership title
Sky Sports pundit and former Ibrox star Richard Foster has claimed that Rangers are now favourites to win the Scottish Premiership after they moved six points clear at the top of the league.
Goals from Joe Aribo and Jermain Defoe extended the gap to Celtic and meant that they remain unbeaten with 12 matches played.
Celtic do have a game in hand on their old firm rivals, but Foster believes that the form of Rangers under Steven Gerrard will have presented a real worry to Hoops supporters.
Richard Foster told Sky Sports: “They are not even conceding chances, let alone goals and I think that is what has been more impressive.
“I think obviously they are very good going forward, and yesterday’s game could have been tricky but they had it won in 15 minutes and then cruised to victory.
“The way that they are so controlled with everything they do, I think they will be worried on the other half of Glasgow.”
Solid foundations
The key to Rangers success so far has been their defence, with Gerrard’s side having conceded just three Scottish Premiership goals in 12 matches.
James Tavernier and Connor Goldson have been rock solid, ever-presents at the back, but equally impressive has been been new man Calvin Bassey who has proven himself an able deputy for Borna Barisic.
Depth in the squad is absolutely essential as the fixtures rack up with Rangers fighting on two big fronts.
The form of youngsters Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Ianis Hagi and Cedric Itten further up the pitch have also been impressive, with Gerrard seemingly finding a good blend between youth and experience as Defoe and Steven Davis continue to deliver.
The bookies go along with Foster too – Rangers are as low as 1.44 to win the title this season, with Celtic priced at a big 2.75.
It’s the first time since Gerrard has taken over that the odds have swung like this.
