Chris Sutton makes big claim about Gerrard, states whether Lennon should be sacked right now
Big Celtic fan Chris Sutton has finally admitted what the Rangers fans have known for a while now – that he would take Steven Gerrard over Neil Lennon.
Sutton also claimed that Lennon was in trouble at Celtic and that the next few games are “absolutely crucial” for his job.
Rangers built a six-point lead at the top of the Premiership after a 2-0 win against Livingston on Sunday.
That followed Celtic dropping another two points following a 3-3 draw with Aberdeen.
Celtic lost to Rangers last week and were brushed aside by AC Milan in the Europa League.
It’s led to serious criticism from Celtic fans and one phoned BBC 606 on Sunday night.
“There are serious grumblings among the Celtic fans here,” he said. “Celtic just now, the players are not responding to what Neil Lennon is trying to do.
“There’s something seriously not right at Celtic. Celtic fans are in sheer panic.”
Sutton responded saying, “Do I think he should walk right now? No. Do I think he’s close to losing his job? I think we all know when the pressure is really on when you’re the manager of Celtic or Rangers. The issue is the team haven’t played well and in the big games, Celtic have failed. The performance wasn’t good against AC Milan.
“They’ve got a lot of issues to resolve. Today’s draw at Aberdeen, I don’t think Lennon should be sacked on the back of that… But the next few games are absolutely crucial.”
On the same show (18 mins) Sutton said that Steven Gerrard is the best manager at the moment.
“At this moment in time it is a tough one,” Sutton said. “Steven Gerrard hasn’t won anything, no trophies, Neil Lennon has won five titles in Scotland.
“Right now, you are probably talking about this week and Rangers won so you would have to take Gerrard wouldn’t you just based on that.”
Lennon in trouble
There’s a long way to go in what is a hugely important season for Rangers and Gerrard, but things are looking good so far.
Rangers are still unbeaten in all competitions. Celtic are in disarray. That’s not just us saying this, the Celtic fans are in turmoil.
And, if the next few games are crucial for Lennon, he’s not got an easy time of it. Lille are up first in the Europa League, then Aberdeen in the cup semi-final and then Sparta Prague.
It’s incredible to think that Lennon’s job could be in danger if he doesn’t win these games. And there’s no doubt that sacking their manager at this stage in the season would do irreparable harm to their campaign.
Rangers face Lech Poznan and then Kilmarnock on Sunday and could be nine points clear at the top after that game.
That’s going to heap even more pressure on Celtic.
