‘Unbelievable’ – Barry Ferguson awestruck by one ‘Fantastic’ Rangers player v Livingston

Barry Ferguson was blown away by Jermain Defoe’s killer instinct in the penalty area as the Rangers forward scored a sublime goal against Livingston on Sunday.

Defoe, 38, opened his account for the Scottish Premiership season in the 16th minute when he got himself on the end of a long-range pass by right-back James Tavernier.

The former England international judged the flight of the ball to perfection as he hit it first time with a beautifully weighted finish into the bottom corner.

Kemar Roofe will undoubtedly win Rangers’ goal of the season award for his effort from his own half on Thursday night but for all the razzle-dazzle of a long-range stunner like that, Defoe’s was as good as it gets for fans of the “cool, calm and collected” finishes.

Former Rangers star Ferguson was in the studio at Ibrox on Sunday and when he was asked for his thoughts on Defoe’s goal, he couldn’t help but wax lyrical about the veteran forward.

“He’s playing on three centre-backs here but he’s always between the three centre-backs. He’s always so difficult [to mark] and he’s always looking for the areas that are really difficult to pick up,” said Ferguson at half-time on RangersTV on Sunday.

“His movement, if anybody’s watching it who plays the game, it’s unbelievable stuff and the finish is great. The technique, a lot of players will struggle to do that.

“He’s a fantastic player.”

We’re lucky to have Defoe.

Yes, he turned 38-years-old earlier this month and yes, he has struggled with injuries this season.

But that’s the kind of thing he has in his locker that can be unleashed in matches like this.

Unfortunately for Defoe, he’s missed out on Steven Gerrard’s Europa League squad, which meant that he wasn’t involved in the win against Standard Liege on Thursday night.

But not having him in those games means he’s extra ready for matches like this one against Livingston when he can come in, let the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe get a rest and hopefully bag a few goals in the process.

Defoe had made just three appearances in all competitions this season before playing Livingston.

Now that he’s clearly up to full speed again, we hope to see a bit more of the former Premier League striker in the coming weeks and months to help Rangers win major silverware.

In other Rangers news, fans were drooling over this “unreal” player’s performance against Livingston.
