Sir Kenny Dalglish shares what he instantly thought when Roofe scored Rangers stunner v Liege
Sir Kenny Dalglish has said that Kemar Roofe’s goal for Rangers against Standard Liege is one of the ‘most memorable in history’.
In the final moments of the Gers’ 2-0 win over Liege on Thursday, Roofe sent the football world into raptures with a phenomenal goal, lobbing the Liege keeper from his own half after beating three opposition players.
Writing in his column for The Sunday Post, former Celtic player Dalglish hailed Roofe’s goal as ‘up there’ with the best ever, while admitting that he thought the Gers forward was trying to hit the corner flag.
He said, “The way he held off three or four challenges before scoring from inside his own half has rightly put it up there with the most-memorable in history. Steven Gerrard stated that it’s the best goal he’s ever seen live, which is an outstanding compliment.
“Me? My memory is not that great that I can remember every goal! Watching it live, I thought Kemar was just hitting the ball into a corner to kill time. Then I can see it on target, and I thought: ‘Oh aye, by the way . . .’.
Roofe’s effort will take some beating when it comes to the best goal awards at the end of the season and it came at such an important time as Liege started to turn up the heat on Rangers in the final moments of the game.
Roofe hadn’t been on the pitch long before he stole the headlines. He was making his return from injury and his contribution has led to some Gers fans calling for him to start in the league instead of Alfredo Morelos who has now gone eight Rangers games without finding the net.
Whether he starts in the Gers’ next game isn’t a huge issue. Steven Gerrard will just be happy that Roofe hasn’t lost his goalscoring touch while he’s been out injured. It could also do Morelos some good if he has competition for his position. Perhaps we will see a response from the Colombian the next time he plays for the Light Blues.
The weekend’s game against Livingston may come too soon for Roofe but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him start when the Gers take on Lech Poznan at Ibrox this coming Thursday after his heroics last time out in Europe.
In other Rangers news, Steven Gerrard has said that Alfredo Morelos doesn’t need to score goals to contribute to his side.
