‘Oh my good God’ – Jim White delivers verdict after Gerrard comments on Rangers star
Jim White has hailed the “wow moment” provided by Rangers striker Kemar Roofe in the 2-0 win against Standard Liege on Thursday night, calling it a “miraculous goal” and an “incredible strike”.
Roofe scored from inside his own half in injury time after spotting the Standard keeper off his line and manager Steven Gerrard hailed it as the best live goal he’s seen.
That’s some praise coming from Gerrard.
Talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Friday, 10am), the goal was the very first thing that was talked about on the show.
“It was a wow moment,” said White. “Steven Gerrard said it’s the best live goal he’s ever seen and that’s saying something.
“He hit in 54.6 yards. He hit it further than 10 buses all lined up together. He hit it further than the height of the Colosseum. He hit it further than the length of a Boeing 737.
“There were some Standard Liege fans in there, they saw it, they wouldn’t have been happy with it.
“It was a miraculous goal, an incredible strike. Oh my good god, what a strike, a peach of a goal.”
Pundit Perry Groves agreed saying, “It’s the stage of the game he scored in that makes it so impressive.
“He picked the ball up, beat three players, gets to the halfway line… The technique, but to have the power and the vision to score. But when the goalkeeper is on the floor and he’s pretending he’s got cramp, that was brilliant.”
Back to earth for Livingston
This was a real “wow moment” and one that rightly drew praise from Steven Gerrard.
With the game at 1-0, Gerrard might not have been so pleased to see Roofe gearing up for a shot rather than taking the ball in the corner.
If the keeper had got back and caught the ball, Roofe might have been in for a talking to rather than making all the headlines.
But it was a wonder strike and beyond the elation in the moment, this could be exactly what Roofe needed.
He did okay in Anderlecht but never did enough to impress the fans over there.
This should put him in line for a start on Sunday and having both him and Morelos on form is a huge boost to the Gers’ title hopes.
It’s important that Gerrard brings his Rangers players back down to earth, though. Livingston is such an important game after big wins in huge games against Celtic and Standard.
These are the games that are going to define whether Rangers go on to lift the Premiership trophy.
