Ibrox View: Celtic legend admits on talkSPORT what the world twigged about Lennon side this week

Celtic legend Stiliyan Petrov was on talkSPORT this morning but he didn’t have anything positive to say after a dreadful week for his former club.

And he admitted they didn’t have the hunger to go toe-to-toe with Rangers.

They lost 2-0 to the Gers on Saturday before getting thumped 3-1 by AC Milan in their first Europa League game.

But he admitted it was the manner of the defeat against Rangers that really hurt this week, although he stoped short of saying it was the end for Neil Lennon.

Talking on the Jim White Show (Friday, midday) Petrov said, “It was a negative start for Celtic in the Europa League.

“When things aren’t going well you always expect this speculation [about Lennon’s position]. Neil has been there a number of times and I think he can turn it around.”

Jim White said it was the manner of the defeat against Rangers that has got fans talking about whether Lennon should go.

“Yes, that’s the concern at the moment for me and for everyone else,” Petrov said.

“Celtic are normally competitive and go toe-to-toe with Rangers but that wasn’t the case. We saw a hunger from Rangers.”

Rangers

The stats from the Old Firm game make for damning reading for Celtic fans.

Rangers had nine shots to Celtic’s five. And five on target to Celtic’s none.

To not have a single shot on target in an Old Firm game at home is embarrassing.

And putting aside the stats, the eye test was enough to show that Celtic had given up the ghost almost as soon as the game had started.

When Celtic diehards like Petrov can see it, it’s no wonder that Lennon’s position as manager is being talked about.

A defeat to Aberdeen in the early kick-off on Sunday could really put the cat among the pigeons.
