Michael Owen predicts scoreline of Rangers clash v Standard Liege

Michael Owen has predicted that Rangers will be held to a draw by Standard Liege in their opening Europa League group stage fixture on Thursday night.

Steven Gerrard’s men make their way to Belgium this week on the back off a vital 2-0 win against Celtic in the Old Firm on Saturday.

And although Standard’s squad is plagued by selection issues due to several players and staff members testing positive for COVID-19, ex-Liverpool forward Owen has predicted that Rangers will only be good enough for a 1-1 draw in Liege on Thursday.

“Rangers travel to Belgium with the wind in their sails after a comprehensive win at Celtic Park. The Gers dispatched Galatasaray in their final qualifying round and despite Standard Liege coming into this undefeated in their last four matches, I reckon Steven Gerrard’s men could well get a point here,” said Owen on the BetVictor website.

Owen clearly doesn’t fancy his former Liverpool team-mate Gerrard to lead Rangers to a winning start in their Europa League group stage campaign – but we do.

The Gers are absolutely flying at the moment and that Old Firm derby win on Saturday is going to give Gerrard’s players a massive confidence boost going into their clash against Standard Liege.

The Belgian club are without several players due to positive coronavirus tests while the Light Blues have almost everyone available.

Rangers have beaten Willem II and Galatasaray on their way to this stage of the competition and we reckon neither of them are a lot worse – if at all worse – than Standard Liege.

We’re predicting a straightforward 2-0 win for the Glasgow giants.

In other Rangers news, Gerrard has urged the board to get this player tied down to a new contract.
