‘Absolutely no need’, ‘Only surprise’ – Some Rangers fans react as Gerrard drops key man v Liege

There have been mixed reactions from some Rangers fans as Filip Helander has been dropped to the bench for the Gers’ Europa League clash with Standard Liege.

Manager Steven Gerrard made several changes from the side that beat Celtic 2-0 last weekend, but it is the omission of Helander that has received some criticism from some Gers fans.

Helander was immense against the Hoops and was a key man as the Light Blues kept a clean sheet at Celtic Park.

Leon Balogun comes in to partner Connor Goldson in the Gers backline instead. Balogun is a good player but with Rangers looking to get their Europa League group stage campaign off to a winning start, is it wise of Gerrard to change a defence that kept a clean sheet on its last outing?

Gerrard has also brought Ryan Jack and Ianis Hagi back into the Rangers starting eleven for their first Europa League group game, as Brandon Barker and Steven Davis drop to the bench.

Some Gers fans took to social media to express their surprise that the Swedish defender was dropped to the bench, while others saw it as a positive as it highlights the strength and depth in Gerrard’s squad.

Here are how some Rangers fans reacted to Helander’s drop to the bench.

Hopefully, Rangers can manage without Helander and overcome the challenge of Standard Liege.
