Can do special things – Exclusive: Pundit tips Gerrard to start 21yo with point to prove v Liege

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has tipped Steven Gerrard to start Ianis Hagi against Standard Liege after the winger was dropped for the game against Celtic last week.

Gerrard surprised a few people by picking Brandon Barker on the right in the Old Firm clash but he didn’t have a great game.

Hagi was a flop in Belgium after signing for Genk and McLeish tipped him for a start and said he would have a “point to prove”.

Talking exclusively to Ibrox News McLeish said, “You wonder if he would be thought of for playing against a Belgian team, he’s got something to prove to his country colleagues over there.

“He’s going to want to show them how much he’s improved as a Rangers players.

“We know he can do special things, we’ve seen him do it in European games before.

“It’s a real dilemma for Gerrard, though. Does he keep the momentum going or make a couple of tweaks?

“Hagi has definitely got the ability to do something different. He’s still finding his feet in terms of being a regular in the Rangers starting XI but that takes time.”

We’re expecting Hagi to come back in on the right, with Ryan Kent on the left and Alfredo Morelos up top.

Barker has been getting the nod for big games but he was possibly the only Rangers player who wasn’t at his best on Saturday and he should drop to the bench.
