‘Flattered Celtic’ – Chris Sutton makes bold Rangers claim after Old Firm victory
Chris Sutton has claimed that Rangers 2-0 win in the Old Firm derby on Saturday actually flattered Celtic.
The former Hoops striker isn’t known for praising his former rivals but admitted that the Gers could have won by even more at Celtic Park.
Steven Gerrard’s men continued their phenomenal defensive record, with goals either side of half-time from Conor Goldson sealing all three points.
Sutton claimed that Celtic were gutless in the game and that there depleted squad was nowhere near a good enough excuse.
“Today was a big game for Celtic – everybody judges Celtic and Rangers,” he said on BBC 5 Live Sport.
“Celtic came up way short. There was still enough quality on the pitch to perform much better than they did and the scoreline flattered Celtic.
“Rangers could have won by more goals and I thought Celtic were pretty gutless.”
It won’t have been easy for Sutton to admit that his beloved Celtic were completely dominated by their fierce rivals on their own patch.
Rangers were superb and deserved everything. The Bears dispossessed Celtic 15 times and despite keeping less of the ball, they forced more shots on goal according to WhoScored.
This was the first move in the Scottish title race and saw Rangers stamp their authority in the league taking a four-point gap.
Gerrard will make sure that his side remains humble though, and not make the same mistakes they did last season after winning this fixture.
