Title favourites, 27y/o takes new role – Three things learned from Rangers win v Celtic

Rangers made it back-to-back wins at Parkhead on Saturday after beating Celtic 2-0 in the latest Old Firm derby.

Goals either side of half-time from Conor Goldson saw Steven Gerrard’s men take control of top spot in the Scottish league.

It could have been much worst for the home side, with the Gers executing their game plan superbly from the first whistle.

Ibrox News have picked out some things we noticed from the victory, as Gerrard became the first manager since Walter Smith to earn back-to-back away wins.

Here are three things learned from the 2-0 victory against Celtic…

1. Goldson takes up new role

Goldson couldn’t have imagined a better performance on Saturday. Not only did he become the goal threat in the final third, scoring twice, but he dominated the Celtic front line. The 27-year-old had three shots on goal according to WhoScored – more than any other player on the pitch, something we can’t imagine has happened many times in his career. Goldson also won three aerial battles and easily walked away with the man of the match award as he helped continue his side’s phenomenal defensive record.

2. Rangers make first move

This was the perfect opportunity to get three points, with Celtic missing a number of their big players. Outside of that, it was also the first chance for one of these sides to make their move to take control of the league. The Bears are now four points ahead of their rivals having played one more game and regardless of what happens in the game, they will remain top. This isn’t an excuse to take their foot off the gas though, just as they did last season – they must take this opportunity to push on, and extend that gap even further.

3. Tables turned by Morelos

How many times have we seen opposing sides looking to push the buttons of Alfredo Morelos to get him sent off? The Colombian made sure he turned the tables on Saturday, constantly a thorn in the side of Celtic and even giving Scott Brown a tap on the head for good measure. The Gers striker riled the Hoops defence consistently, and never let them settle. It’s laughable how once the shoe is on the other foot, Morelos all of a sudden deserves a red card – the striker played a massive role today, even if it wasn’t on the ball.
