‘Really big boost’ – Exclusive: McLeish reacts to early Rangers team news v Celtic
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has said that having Allan McGregor fit for the clash against Celtic today is a “really big boost” for Rangers.
The keeper was a doubt for the game but Steven Gerrard suggested he was fit in his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Gerrard said the game would probably come too soon for Joe Aribo and Kemar Roofe, but that “everyone else is pretty much fine”.
Talking exclusively to Ibrox News McLeish said, “Allan McGregor is a big player for Rangers.
“He’s got real presence because of his experience and it means that when he’s in a one-on-ones, that strikers may choke.
“He won’t necessarily go to ground straight away and he can almost come across like a defender in those situations.
“He’s a really good goalkeeper and if he’s fit to play as Gerrard has suggested then it’s a really big boost for Rangers.”
Some pundits are trying to put pressure on Rangers by saying that Celtic have been hit harder with injuries ahead of the Old Firm clash.
But Roofe is likely out and Alfredo Morelos had an epic journey back to Glasgow this week after international duty.
If Rangers do win – as some bookies think they will – it will be earned on the pitch.
