‘Not ideal’ – Athletic journalist delivers Morelos Old Firm update after Colombia 2-2 v Chile
Rangers fans would have been hoping that Alfredo Morelos stayed on the bench for Colombia in their World Cup qualifier against Chile on Tuesday night.
However, he came on early on in the second half of the game as Colombia secured a point in injury time.
Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell has said that Morelos now faces a race back to Glasgow ahead of the Old Firm clash against Celtic on Saturday.
Writing on the Athletic on Wednesday morning Campbell said, “Understandably a lot of focus on the international players who are away just now.
“The travel time for Alfredo Morelos getting back from Colombia is not ideal with the game on Saturday but at least he is active.
“Came on at left wing v Chile in their 2-2 draw last night.”
Internationals never come at a good time but with the first Old Firm clash of the season set for the early kick-off on Saturday, these are particularly unwelcome.
The good news is that Morelos came through the game unscathed after coming on for the last 50 minutes of the game.
And he was involved in the dramatic late equaliser that kept Colombia in third place in their World Cup qualifying group.
He steadied the ball in the area before Radmel Falcao turned in from close range after a shot from Johan Mojica.
The bad news is that he now faces an epic 1600-mile journey to get back to Glasgow that could take 24 hours.
That should still be fine, although as Campbell says, it’s not ideal, and Steven Gerrard will be hoping there are no delays.
Celtic have their own problems with a number of players doubtful after positive COVID-19 tests.
Morelos will be hoping to take advantage of that and finally get his first goal against Celtic on Saturday.
