Euro club statement details how Rangers could play in front of fans in EL

Rangers could play in front of fans when they travel to Belgium to play Standard Liege for their Europa League group stage tie.

This follows news from earlier this month that Lech Poznan could have 10,000 home fans in their ground when the Gers travel to Poland.

Standard Liege have said that they will monitor the situation between games but as it stands they will welcome some fans into Stade Maurice Dufrasne when the sides meet on October 22.

On a statement posted to the Standard Liege website, the club said, “In agreement with the City of Liege, the infectious diseases department of the CHU de Liege, the Minister of Sports and UEFA, a limited number of supporters may be welcomed into the stadium in order to push our players towards victory.”

This will be frustrating for Gers fans who are still waiting to see their side play in the flesh as two of the three sides they will play in the Europa League group stage will be welcoming fans back while Ibrox remains shut.

Rangers have managed without their fans in Europe so far this season. The Gers boast a record of three wins from three and they have only conceded one goal across those games.

Steven Gerrard’s side scored eleven goals in wins over Lincoln Red Imps, Willem II and Galatasaray as they qualified for the group stage of the competition with relative ease.

There was some concern when the Gers found out they would be playing Turkish giants Galatasaray for a place in the group stage. But under the lights at Ibrox, goals from Scott Arfield and James Tavernier helped the Light Blues to a 2-1 win which secured their side at least another six European games.

Rangers will get their European campaign underway following this weekend’s Old Firm game, in what could prove to be a huge week for the club.
