Player tipped to be ‘best player in Scotland’ if Rangers sign him amid speculation
Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi has said that Jack Wilshere would be the ‘best player in Scotland’ if he signed for Rangers.
Last week, Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported that the Gers were in ‘advanced talks’ with Wilshere after the 28-year-old had his contract terminated at West Ham on October 5, and Xavi believes it could be a good move.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Xavi said a move to Ibrox could be a ‘good fit’ for Wilshere and that working under Steven Gerrard would also be beneficial for the ex-Arsenal man.
He said, “Rangers could be a very good fit for him. The pace in Scotland is not as fast as England and it would give him more time on the ball. That is where he excels, his vision and passing is incredible.
“They are a big club with a young coach who knows what it takes to win at the very highest level. It would be a risk because of his injuries but if Rangers could manage to keep him fit and without injury, he would be the best player in Scotland.”
Of course, there are huge question marks over the signing of Wilshere due to his injury record. He has missed seasons of football in the past and Gers fans will be worries that if Wilshere signs, he would spend more time on the injury table than on the pitch.
Wilshere only started two Premier League games for West Ham last season, after missing the majority of the season with a groin injury. The England international hasn’t played regular football for quite some time now meaning it would probably take him a while to get back to his past levels of quality.
That quality is undeniable. Wilshere finished second in 2010’s golden boy award, losing out to Mario Balotelli. The 28-year-old’s quality has always been clear but he has only hit that potential on a few occasions, most notably against Xavi’s Barcelona in 2011. If Wilshere does arrive at Ibrox then Gers fans will be hoping for more performances like that from the Englishman and if he does then he probably would be ‘the best player in Scotland’.
