‘Unbelievable’ – Kris Boyd heaps praise on ‘myth’-busting Rangers talent
Kris Boyd has claimed that Rangers captain James Tavernier offers an “unbelievable” amount of creativity for his side.
The right-back has scored eight goals in his last eight games for the Gers, and the Sky Sports pundit has suggested that the skipper is busting the “myth” that defenders can’t be prolific attacking talents.
After his latest strike, the opener in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Ross County, Boyd was eager to sing the 28-year-old’s praises.
Speaking on the Sky Sports Scottish Football Podcast, he said: “James Tavernier looks like the one right now. Ryan Kent is obviously the star man, but when you look at Rangers, Tavernier is one who jumps out at you as well.
“The way he plays, the way he passes the ball, gets up and down that wing. I think his defensive role has improved so much as well. It’ll be interesting to see how that is against Celtic because those are the games where sometimes he’s not as his best.
“But what he gives Rangers going forward is unbelievable. You always think that a right-back is somebody who goes and tackles – it’s a myth. He looks like someone who can create at any opportunity.
“He looks like a number 10 playing at right-back.”
How good has Tavernier been lately?
There’s no arguing that Tavernier has been absolutely sublime of late.
The captain has led by example during the early stages of this season, and it’s little surprise to hear the likes of Boyd wax lyrical about him.
Not only has he been on fire in front of goal, but his general gameplay has notably improved too.
Compared to his averages from last season, his shot accuracy, pass accuracy, duel success rate, dribble success rate, and cross accuracy are all better, as per Wyscout.
At a time when Rangers need big personalities to lead from the front in their effort to prevent a dreaded 10-in-a-row, Tavernier has stepped up to the plate superbly.
