Ibrox Exclusive: McLeish raves about Rangers ‘controller’ – ‘That’s what I felt was missing’
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has claimed that Rangers veteran Steven Davis brings a much-needed measure of control to Steven Gerrard’s midfield in Glasgow.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss suggested that the 35-year-old has adapted his game as he has gotten older to ensure that he does not waste energy unnecessarily.
The Northern Ireland international has featured 10 times for Gerrard’s side already this season, and McLeish has argued that his ability to dictate play is a highly useful asset.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Stevie Davis is a great player.
“We came across him in his Fulham days and I really think he’s a very composed midfielder.
“He now knows all about where to go and how to do it – saving the legs now that they’re not the fresh young legs that he had back in the day.
“He’s still very important to the team. That’s what I felt was missing at times last season, that midfield controller, but Stevie looks as if he’s doing that extremely well.”
Davis initially signed for the Gers from Fulham back in 2008, and stayed at the club for four years before leaving for Southampton.
Gerrard moved to bring him back from the Saints in January of 2019 on a loan deal that was made permanent last summer, and the experienced talent has gone on to make 271 appearances for the Gers across his two spells at Ibrox.
