Ally McCoist raves about ‘Brilliant’ Rangers-linked player with reported talks underway

Ally McCoist has said he would ‘like to see’ Jack Wilshere at Ibrox amid reports that Rangers are in advanced talks with the ex-Arsenal midfielder.

Earlier this week, Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported that the Gers were in ‘advanced talks’ with Wilshere after the 28-year-old had his contract terminated at West Ham earlier this week, and McCoist believes it would be a good move.

Speaking to TalkSPORT, the former Gers boss says that Wilshere still has a lot to offer and that he can add ‘a little bit of steel’ to the Ibrox midfield.

McCoist said, “He’s just got to get back playing. He says he’s been fit for five or six months now, which is great news. I heard Joe Cole say he should go to America, and I get that, I absolutely get that. The lifestyle, go and play somewhere hot, whether it’s Tampa or Miami or wherever it may be, I get that.

“But I just feel he’s still surely got too much to offer. I’d like to see him at Ibrox. I think he’s a brilliant football player, I really do, I think he’s a terrific little football player.

“I think Rangers probably need a little bit of steel in the middle of the park as well, but if you’ve got an opportunity to sign real quality like that then you can’t let that go by. Just for him himself, I just want to see him back playing somewhere at a good level, a smile on his face, stay injury-free and enjoy the rest of his career.”

The Gers managed to add to their midfield on the final day of the transfer window, loaning South African midfielder Bongani Zungu from French side Amiens.

But it looks as if Steven Gerrard is keen to add another midfielder to his squad with Wilshere potentially moving north of the border.

Wilshere only made 18 Premier League appearances for West Ham since he signed for the Hammers in 2018. He found his progress halted by injury troubles which have blighted him throughout his career.

His injury record will cause concern for Rangers fans, who won’t want to see a player of Wilshere’s quality stuck on the injury table. But it looks as though the Gers are willing to take a punt on the England international despite his injury record.

There is no doubt that if the English midfielder can stay fit then he can be a real asset at Ibrox and it could be the perfect place for Wilshere to jump-start his ailing career.
