‘It can destroy them’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Alex McLeish backs Rangers loan exit for contract rebel

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has suggested that it was the right move for Rangers starlet Kai Kennedy to leave the club on loan in the late stages of the transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss claimed that it was difficult for youngsters to get the game time they need to develop in Glasgow because of the pressure that Steven Gerrard faces to win silverware.

Kennedy has been at the centre of a contract wrangle with Rangers for some time now, having refused to agree to an extension on his current deal over the summer.

The 18-year-old has since joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan, and will stay with the Championship side until January.

And McLeish has argued that it’s the right move for the promising talent.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Let’s face it, Stevie needs to win a trophy.

“Obviously, the big one is there, and it looks like it’s going to be between Rangers and Celtic. If Rangers maintain the winning attitude and keep putting in performances like they did recently, that’s going to be key for them.

“For the young ones, it’s hard to throw them into a team that is expected to win every week. Sometimes it can destroy them as well. Steven Gerrard is under the pressure of achieving title and cups, and the young ones might not be ready just yet.

“You can throw them in as a sub when things are going well, but you have to take care of the young player as well. Go and get some more experience with a team that probably doesn’t have the same expectations as Rangers. “

Kennedy made his senior debut for the Gers back in January, coming on for a nine-minute cameo against Stranraer in the Scottish Cup.

As things stand, that remains his only senior appearance in Glasgow.

In other news, Rangers ace proves he is exciting alternative to Gers regular in Sunday masterclass.
