‘They will punish them’ – Michael Stewart fires warning at Rangers after 2-0 win v Ross County
Michael Stewart has claimed that Rangers will be punished by better teams if they afford them the opportunities they gave to Ross County on Sunday.
The Gers ran out 2-0 winners in a relatively comfortable clash at Ibrox, with James Tavernier and Brandon Barker on the scoresheet.
But the match didn’t pass without a handful of worrying moments for Steven Gerrard’s men, and on another day, Stewart believes that they could have been made to pay the price.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene, he said: “That’s the thing from a Rangers perspective.
“I think Gary McAllister was talking after the game about them perhaps not being up to the standards and the levels that they’ve been at of late.
“I’m sure they’ll analyse it and they’ll be delighted to get the three points, but against better opposition, if they allow them to get into those areas they will punish them.
“Ross County weren’t able to do that this afternoon.”
Were Rangers ever in danger on Sunday?
There were a couple of moments that left a little to be desired defensively, but by and large, this was a comfortable win for the Gers.
In fact, as per Wyscout, County only managed an xG of 0.28, some 0.46 lower than the average total that teams have managed against Rangers this season.
Granted, if a couple of towering headers had found their target rather than sailing over the crossbar, or if Ross County had managed to break through one of the fleeting gaps that opened up for them in the second half, then this could have been a different story.
But the fact is, they didn’t.
No team in the world is going to be completely sound at the back all of the time, and it makes no sense to start dealing in counter-factual accounts when the three points are already on the board.
