Report – Rangers close to agreement for 27y/o int’l, talks to find ‘new common ground’
Rangers are close to an agreement for Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu, according to France Football.
The 27-year-old has been consistently linked with the Gers this summer, with The Scotsman reporting last week that the club had revived talks for the player after a move collapsed earlier in the transfer window.
And the French outlet have now provided an update on where the deal stands.
It is now understood that a deal that would take Zungu to Ibrox is edging closer as the Gers and Amiens seek to find “new common ground”.
It’s not a foregone conclusion just yet, however, with Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor also in the picture.
But the report suggests that Rangers are leading the race for his signature in the closing stages of the transfer window.
What can we take from this update?
There’s reason to be cautiously optimistic here.
Gary McAllister has made it clear that there is no guarantee that Rangers will sign anybody before the transfer deadline, but if they did, it would have to be somebody who could directly challenge for a first team role.
Zungu would surely fall into that category.
Alex McLeish has previously told Ibrox News that he believes that the Gers need another central midfielder, and with 24 South Africa caps to his name, the player clearly has a certain amount of pedigree.
As recently discussed by Ibrox News, Zungu gets about the engine room well, and having that extra bit of verve and energy in the centre of the park would surely be a good thing for Steven Gerrard’s men.
If we can get this one over the line, we think it could be a great deal.
