Late double deal on the cards at Rangers hours before deadline, could be initial loans – report

Rangers could sign two new midfielders before the Scottish transfer window slams shut at midnight tonight (Monday), according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims that Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu is expected to join the Light Blues on a loan-to-buy basis.

It is understood that Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic could also sign for the Gers on an initial loan deal with the possibility of a permanent deal next summer when his contract at Goodison Park expires.

Steven Gerrard rubbished rumours that Besic, 28, was undergoing a medical at Ibrox last week. However, as the Daily Record points out, the Rangers manager did not deny that the Gers were interested in the Bosnia and Herzegovina international.

It is widely accepted by Rangers fans that the club needs to bolster their central midfield options before the transfer window closes and bringing in Zungu and Besic would undoubtedly do that.

Both are more likely to play in deep-lying roles at Ibrox if they were to complete last-minute moves from Amiens and Everton respectively, which adds further competition to the likes of Glen Kamara and Ryan Jack.

However, do Rangers really need two players arriving in the exact same position?

Why not go in for a box-to-box midfielder or a goalscoring midfielder rather than two players who seem to be cut from the same cloth.

Both players have also struggled for game-time in the last year with Zungu starting just 10 Ligue 1 fixtures for Amiens last season as they were relegated and Besic starting only two times in the Premier League while on loan at Sheffield United.

Gerrard’s fitness coaches will have a lot of work on their hands to get them up to speed.
