Athletic journo delivers big update on Alfredo Morelos future at Rangers

There is “no prospect” of Alfredo Morelos leaving Rangers before the transfer window closes this evening, according to The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell.

The Colombian hitman has been heavily linked with a potential exit from Ibrox in recent weeks, with Lille emerging as potential suitors for the player.

It is understood that Morelos was eager to join the French club earlier in the summer, but financial restrictions have forced them to pull out of a move for the striker.

And that will likely mean that he stays put for the time being, with no other obvious destinations on the table.

Writing on a live blog for The Athletic (10.20am), Campbell said: “In terms of outgoings The Athletic understands that there is no prospect of a late deal being done for Alfredo Morelos to leave the club.

“Despite making it clear he wanted to join Lille, who first made their interest known in June, Rangers stood firm in their valuation of the player and the French club have now pulled out due to FFP restrictions.

“The other interested parties were not willing to commit to a fee of more than £15 million with budgets tight across Europe.”

What does this mean for Morelos and Rangers?

In the simplest terms, it means that we’ve got him until January, at least.

Whether that’s a good thing or not depends almost entirely on the player’s personal application over the coming months.

If he can get his head down and play the football that saw him hit 28 goals before Christmas last season, then this could prove to the biggest coup of Rangers’ window.

If, however, we get the moping, sulking Morelos that bubbles away just beneath the surface, then it could prove to be more of a hindrance than a help.

That’s a point that Frank McAvennie has made to Ibrox News before, and we just have to hope and pray that El Bufalo takes this for what it is and realises that he still has a major role to play for the Gers in their title push.
