‘Probably used to that’ – Jeff Stelling aims cheeky Celtic jibe at Rangers legend Ally McCoist
Jeff Stelling has taken a cheeky dig at Ally McCoist over his beloved Rangers.
The Ibrox legend was a guest on Soccer Saturday this weekend, but found himself on the receiving end of some tongue-in-cheek banter from the Sky Sports host.
Looking back on Leicester City’s sensational win over Manchester City last Sunday, Stelling heaped praise on ex-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers for his role in the victory.
Speaking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, 12pm, October 3rd), he said: “He [Rodgers] made some big calls, but I guess, as he used to manage the biggest club in Scotland, he’s probably used to that.”
He added: “Rangers fans, look I’m only joking, I’m only joking.”
After an unrelated jibe earlier in the day, McCoist jokingly responded: “That’s your second one, Jeff.”
Learn your history, Jeff…
To be fair to Stelling, he’s quite clearly joking here, and was purely trying to goad McCoist into a reaction.
But after the past few years and the trials and tribulations that Rangers have been through, there probably are a fair few football fans south of the border who do believe that Celtic are the biggest club in Scotland.
Nine consecutive titles and a treble treble are hard facts to argue against, but if we take a longer, more comprehensive view of history, then there’s still no doubt about who the biggest club in Glasgow are.
With 54 league titles, 33 cup wins, and 27 league cup wins, Rangers aren’t just the most successful team in Scotland, they’re one of, if not the, most successful team in the world.
Still, people have short memories, and the best way to ensure that we’re regarded as the top dogs in Scotland once again is to make sure that we win a 55th league title this season.
