‘Incredible experience’ – Europa League rival in awe of ‘legendary’ Rangers man
Lech Poznan goalkeeper Filip Bednarek has claimed that meeting Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will be an “incredible experience” when the sides face off in the Europa League.
The Gers were drawn against the Polish side in Group D in this season’s competition, along with Portuguese giants Benfica and Standard Liege of Belgium.
As quoted by the Scottish Sun, the Polish goalkeeper said that he thinks his side are “dark horses” in the group, and spoke of his excitement at potentially meeting Ibrox boss Gerrard.
Bednarek said: “We play Benfica, one of the biggest clubs in the world and Rangers who have the legendary Steven Gerrard on the bench as manager.
“To meet the great Steven Gerrard will be an incredible experience for me.
“I would have liked to have drawn AC Milan or Spurs for the glamour, but I think this draw gives us a real chance of continuing our European adventure.
“We are not afraid of anyone and I think we can surprise the teams in the group, especially at home. I think we are the dark horses of the group.”
Filip is the older brother of Southampton defender Jan Bednarek and joined Poznan from Dutch side Heerenveen this summer.
What can we make of the Gers’ Europa League draw?
Things are looking bright, that much is for sure.
Of course, there is no such thing as an easy draw in a competition of this calibre, but at the very least, you would have to say that Rangers have a fighting chance.
If we take Poznan, for example, they currently sit ninth in the Polish first division after playing four games this season.
Of the other two sides in the group, you would probably have to say that Benfica pose the biggest threat in paper, but having come through qualifying with just one goal conceded, and with a scalp the size of Galatasaray’s to boast about, Rangers will feel that this competition is one they can really take by the scruff of the neck.
