‘Absolutely on fire’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Alex McLeish raves about ‘incredible’ Rangers talent

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has waxed lyrical about Rangers captain James Tavernier following his goal against Galatasaray in midweek.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss hailed the full-back for his “incredible” display in the Europa League qualifier.

The defender applied the finishing touch to a sweeping counterattack that started in his own box, doubling his side’s lead and giving them a crucial cushion in the 2-1 victory.

And McLeish was left awe-struck by what he saw from the 28-year-old.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “What a game he had. He was incredible.

“He has been very topical in the newspapers and the media, and he’s been absolutely on fire.

“Coming in and getting that goal from the wide are, it was a brilliant classic counter attack. Rangers were well in control of the situation, so it wasn’t as if he was running blindly. He knew what he was doing.

“His fellow full-back provided the cross, Barisic. The only other team I’ve seen doing things like that is Liverpool. It was a brilliant performance from Tavernier.”

Tavernier’s goal against Galatasaray was his seventh in 12 appearances across all competitions this season.

The full-back has more than doubled his tally from last season, when he managed a paltry total of three across the entirety of the campaign.
