Gerrard responds when asked if PL midfielder is in Glasgow to undergo Rangers medical
Steven Gerrard has rubbished rumours that Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic is in Glasgow to undergo a medical with Rangers.
Bosnian news outlet Sportske has reported that Besic, 28, is high on Gerrard’s shortlist as he heads towards the Goodison Park exit doors.
Rumours then emerged on Twitter, via FourthOfficial, that Besic was on his way to Glasgow to join the Light Blues on a season-long loan.
However, Gerrard has now quashed that rumour ahead of Rangers’ clash against Ross County on Sunday.
“Someone’s just asked me if Besic’s up in Glasgow having a medical for Rangers. That would be news to me if he was,” Gerrard said on Friday, as shown in a clip on PLZ Soccer’s Twitter account.
“Nothing’s changed in terms of what we’re trying to do in the last few days of the window.”
Rangers need to add at least one new central midfielder before the transfer window slams shut on Monday because they are short of bodies in that area of the squad.
Ryan Jack is back to fitness now, which is a major boost for Gerrard, but the former Aberdeen midfielder has a history of picking up injuries while Joe Aribo is also currently sidelined with an injury.
Steven Davis, at the age of 35, is a good player still but playing multiple matches a week now that the Gers are in the Europa League group stage could prove to be too much for him so signing an extra player in that area of the squad is a must.
Besic has failed to make any of Carlo Ancelotti’s matchday squads at Everton since the English season started last month and really struggled to get game-time at Sheffield United while on loan there last season.
He started just two Premier League matches and made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Blades last season.
It could take a while for him to get up to speed due to him not playing competitive football on a regular basis for such a long time.
If it’s true that Gerrard does want the Everton midfielder, then we’d be pretty disappointed but based on the manager’s latest update, it doesn’t seem that’s the case.
