‘Bring it on’, ‘Easy peasy’ – Some Rangers fans ‘very happy’ with Europa League draw

Rangers have been drawn in a Europa League group with Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan.

The Gers were in pot three for the draw that took place on Friday afternoon, in which the 12 groups were drawn.

Rangers qualified for the group stage of the Europa League after they beat Galatasaray 2-1 at Ibrox on Thursday night, with Scott Arfield and James Tavernier grabbing the important goals.

Rangers were drawn in group D, which means they will travel to Belgium, Portugal and Poland to face Standard Liege, Benfica and Lech Poznan respectively.

Benfica finished fourth in the Portuguese first division last season, while Standard Liege finished fifth in Belgium’s top flight. Lech Poznan finished second in last season’s Ekstraklasa.

The pick of the draw for Rangers fans will surely be Benfica, a side with heaps of European pedigree, and another potential scalp to collect.

Gers fans will take note of how their team got on against Portuguese opposition last season, beating Porto at home before drawing away in the group stage, and beating Braga home and away in the first knockout stage.

The draw could have been a lot worse for Rangers and you’ve only got to look at Celtic for proof. They’ll play AC Milan, Lille and Sparta Prague.

Some Gers fans have reacted well to the draw, and think their side has more than a decent chance of progressing. Others have pointed out that it is a shame there will be no away trips this season.
