Ibrox View: Rangers revive transfer talks for 27y/o, int’l talent would surely be major asset
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has made it very clear that he wants get more business done before the end of the transfer window.
The Gers boss has openly stated that he would like to bring in more additions before the window shuts next week, but has also acknowledged that the likelihood of that happening depends a lot on whether or not his side are able to qualify for the Europa League group stage when they face Galatasaray on Thursday evening.
It would appear, however, that the club are already laying the groundwork for more potential incomings.
According to the Scotsman, the Gers are back in for Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu.
The South Africa international reportedly came close to signing for the Glaswegian club earlier this summer, so much so that it is understood he passed a medical at Ibrox before talks broke down.
But those negotiations have been revitalised, and one man who will surely be delighted by that news is Alex McLeish.
The former Gers boss has made it very clear to Ibrox News in the past that he believes Rangers are in need of midfield reinforcements if they are to sustain the longevity of their title challenge this term.
Zungu would certainly solve that problem.
The 27-year-old is a 24-cap international with title-winning experience in his home country and four years’ worth of knowhow in the European game.
As per Wyscout, Zungu’s tendency is to sit and shield his defence, but it’s quite clear that he’s not averse to stepping onto the front foot and driving his team forward a little too.
In short, he has a welcome element of versatility, and with Gerrard likely to prefer a midfield three for the vast majority of this campaign, having a player who can transition between defensive legwork and progressive attacking play would be a real asset.
Here’s hoping we do qualify tonight, and that there are more new faces in the pipeline.
