‘Best thing a manager could have’ – Steven Naismith heaps praise on Rangers first teamer

Steven Naismith has argued that a player like Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield is the “best thing a manager could have”.

The 31-year-old Canada international has found himself in and out of the starting XI at Ibrox in recent times, but has still produced a number of goal involvements this term, including a brace of assists against Motherwell on Sunday.

His performances have led to Steven Gerrard claiming that he has sent a “clear message” of his first team qualities, as well as suggesting that he is an inspiration to other fringe players in Glasgow.

And Naismith agrees wholeheartedly.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, he said: “The biggest thing is, it goes two ways for every player.

“They either blame the manager and blame everybody else, and not themselves, or they say, ‘I’m going to show him, I’m getting back in there’ – and then they get back in.

“For a manager, especially a manager at the Old Firm, that is the best thing a manager could have, a pro like that.”

How good has Arfield been recently?

With two goals and three assists in his last three matches, the midfielder is certainly mining a rich vein of form at the moment.

His display against Motherwell on Sunday was superb, and it was little surprise to see James McFadden hail him for his “magnificent” contribution.

To be fair to the 31-year-old, he has had to bide his time a little for his chance this season.

Arfield had made just one start prior to scoring in the 2-2 draw against Hibernian last month, but he has really taken his opportunity with both hands.

From being on the periphery, he now look undroppable, and the competition for places that will generate at Ibrox will no doubt delight his manager.
