Rangers boss Gerrard names major factor that could prevent late transfer business

Steven Gerrard has admitted that the result of Rangers’ European tie with Galatasaray could affect the final days of the Gers’ transfer window.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference, the Ibrox boss suggested that a win on Thursday would give his side greater room to manoeuvre before the window shuts next week.

The Light Blues have already brought in a number of new faces this summer, with the permanent transfers of Ianis Hagi, Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe among the business that has already been concluded.

But Gerrard says he has made it clear to Ibrox chiefs that he would like more additions before the window slams shut on October 5th.

Gerrard said: “I think I’ve made it pretty clear what I feel we need. But I also respect the club’s position in the current climate and the situation that we’re in.

“I do think that depending on whether we qualify or not would depend on what we try and do in the final days. But I think that’s a question for people who are above me at the club.

“I’ve made it pretty clear what I feel we need to keep moving forward, to make sure that we don’t stand still.”

Rangers have been linked with a move for Preston playmaker Daniel Johnson in recent weeks, but the Daily Record suggest that the Gers have reached an impasse with Preston North End, after offering less than the £4 million asking price for the Jamaican.

How important is Europa League qualification?

Rangers’ advancement to the group stage of the Europa League could give the Ibrox club the financial boost needed to get deals for Johnson, and perhaps even other players over the line.

Stoke City winger Tom Ince has emerged as a potential target, with the 28-year-old firmly out of favour with the Potters.

Advancement to the group stage of the Europa League could also force Gerrard’s side into the transfer market for practical reasons.

With more games to play in what will prove to be a congested season, the Gers manager needs a squad with the strength and depth to compete both domestically and in Europe.

Injuries have already been a concern for Gerrard so far this term, and if he is to sustain a title push and a decent on the continent, he will need plenty of options.
