Report – PL club plot raid for Rangers 28y/o, Gerrard will ‘fight hard’ to hang on to him
West Ham are considering a move for Rangers captain James Tavernier, according to TEAMtalk.
The 28-year-old has been in inspired form so far this season, hitting six goals and four assists in 11 appearances.
And it would appear that his eye-catching displays are attracting attention from south of the border, with the Hammers eager to bring in defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes on October 5th.
Tavernier has two years left on his current contract at Ibrox, with the report suggesting that Rangers are considering offering him fresh terms on that deal.
But it is understood that the Irons have emerged as potential suitors for the full-back, and the Gers could struggle to match the financial clout of a substantial offer from the Premier League.
Despite that fact, TEAMtalk claim that Steven Gerrard would “fight hard” to keep hold of his skipper.
Should we be worried about losing Tavernier before the window closes?
It’s inevitable that transfer speculation is going to mount as the end of the window approaches, and given Tavernier’s scintillating form of late, it’s perhaps unsurprising that his name is being bandied about like this.
The difference between Tavernier’s output this season compared to last is almost like night and day.
Already, he has doubled his goal tally from the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign, and his dribble success rate, pass completion rate, and crossing accuracy rate are all noticeably higher too, as per Wyscout.
But while those traits make him such a desirable target for other clubs, they are also the reason why Rangers will be so desperate to hang on to him.
Tavernier still has couple of years left on his current contract at Ibrox, and that means that the Gers have no obligation to sell him if they don’t want to.
Bearing in mind how important this season is to the club, it’s hard to imagine them letting their captain leave at such a crucial juncture.
