Rangers in talks to sign £3.6m-rated midfielder who’s passed Ibrox medical – report
Rangers have revived talks to sign Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu after almost signing the South Africa international earlier in the transfer window, according to the Scotsman.
The newspaper claims that Zungu, 27, even passed a medical with the Light Blues before there was a breakdown in talks between the Glasgow giants and Ligue 2 club Amiens.
It is understood that Zungu is valued at around £3.6million by Amiens but it’s suggested there’s a chance that price-tag could be lowered due to the transfer window being close to closing and the fact the player’s contract expires next summer.
Zungu would be available on a pre-contract in January and that means Amiens would run the risk of losing the central midfielder for free if they fail to sell him in the current transfer window or get him to pen a new contract.
Rangers aren’t the only team interested in Zungu, however. The Scotsman has added that Olympiakos also want the former Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder, as well as clubs in Spain.
Steven Gerrard could really do with adding a new central midfielder to their squad before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Zungu hasn’t played a lot of football in 2020 with his 16-minute cameo off the bench against Pau at the weekend being his first club appearance since March 6.
Amiens were relegated from Ligue 1 last season but Zungu started just 10 league fixtures before the French campaign was curtailed early due to the coronavirus pandemic.
He’s had a serious lack of game-time and could take a long time to get up to speed at Ibrox.
But, if Rangers qualify for the Europa League group stages, then they are going to need as many players as possible because games will be coming thick and fast up until the end of the year.
In other Rangers news, Alex McLeish claims that £20million would be a steal for this Gers player amid fresh speculation about his future at Ibrox.
