Rangers contract rebel wants to quit Ibrox, PL switch now on the cards – report
Highly-rated teenager Kai Kennedy wants to quit Rangers amid an on-going contract dispute with the club, according to the Daily Record.
The newspaper claims that Kennedy, 18, is in the final year of his contract at Ibrox and there is no chance of him signing a new one.
It is understood he would be willing to run his deal down and leave on a free transfer next summer if he has to.
The Daily Record adds that Premier League club Sheffield United is a potential destination for the Scotland Under-19 attacker while Roma, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have all been credited with an interest in him.
Rangers will allow Kennedy to leave after he decided against signing a new deal due to being unhappy with the amount of first-team opportunities he is likely to get at Ibrox.
Kennedy made his senior debut for the Light Blues in the 2-0 Scottish Cup win against Stranraer last season and was named on the bench by Steven Gerrard in the club’s win over Ross County in the Scottish Premiership in March.
Since then, Kennedy’s not been back in the senior set-up and it does appear as though the clock is ticking on his time in Glasgow.
As he’s a highly-rated young player who reportedly has “huge potential”, it would make a lot of sense to sell him before the transfer window closes on Monday.
Sheffield United are not the richest of Premier League clubs but they would surely offer the Gers a decent fee for the teenage attacker.
And that is way better than letting his contract run down and him leaving for free next summer.
It is a shame that this is what it has come to for Kennedy but if he wants more first-team football, you can’t really argue with him.
However, will he really get more opportunities at Sheffield United than he would have done at Ibrox? We doubt it.
In other Rangers news, Alex McLeish claims that £20million would be a steal for this Gers player amid fresh speculation about his future at Ibrox.
