‘Won’t settle for less’: Gerrard claims ‘excellent’ Gers star must bring that level all the time

Steven Gerard has said that Jordan Jones’ Rangers future is in his own hands, following an impressive display in the Gers 5-1 win over Motherwell.

Jones started and scored his first Rangers goal in Sunday’s impressive win at Fir Park, with a brace each from James Tavernier and Cedric Itten helping to give the Gers three points, and keep them top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Jones has struggled to hold down a place in the Rangers team since he signed from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2019, making just seven league appearances in his first season at Ibrox.

But following his impressive display this weekend, Steven Gerrard has said that if Jones keeps playing well, he will keep getting chances for Rangers.

Speaking to Sky Sports, (via Scottish Sun), Gerrard said, “I thought he was excellent. I thought he was a threat throughout. He played to his strengths, he brought his attributes to the game.

“The message is pretty clear to JJ. He shows that type of level, that’s Jordan Jones. I won’t settle for anything less than the real Jordan Jones.

“He showed it today, he showed it on his cameo on Thursday night. So if he keeps doing it, he’ll keep getting appearances for Rangers.”

Jones was somewhat surprisingly given his first start of the season against Motherwell, after making a first appearance of the season off the bench against Willem II in the Europa League last week.

But he took his chance well when it came for him, running onto the end of a brilliant Scott Arfield through ball, showing great pace and composure to fire an effort past Trevor Carson.

He was withdrawn with 15 minutes to go following a job well done, and Jones could have played himself into contention to start when the Gers take on Turkish side Galatasaray this week.

Rangers will be looking to continue their fine European form against Galatasaray, with Gerrard’s side scoring nine goals and conceding none in their two outings in the Europa League so far this term.

Hopefully, if Jones plays, he can continue his form, and begin to show why he was brought to Ibrox, and provide some competition on the wings.
