Commons: Forget Morelos – ‘daft young boy’ is now real star player at Rangers
Kris Commons says that Ryan Kent would need the powers of Superman to get called up to the England squad.
However, he did say that the player, who he once thought of as a ‘daft young boy’, has now overtaken Alfredo Morelos as the club’s true star player.
There have been calls for Ryan Kent to get his first England call-up, following his impressive start to the season.
The winger has five goals and five assists in 10 appearances in all competitions for Rangers this term.
Gers assistant manager Gary McAllister has said an England call up ‘must be close’ for Kent following his good start to the season, but Kris Commons believes thoughts of the winger getting a call up to Gareth Southgate’s squad is ‘pie-in-the-sky stuff’.
Speaking to the Scottish Daily Mail Commons said, “Ryan Kent for England. It’s an interesting theory which certainly got plenty of tongues wagging over the weekend. But the chances of it actually happening any time soon? Well, that’s another matter.
“Listen, I really like him as a player… But I’m sorry, I think he’d probably need to summon the powers of his namesake Clark Kent to muscle his way into the current England setup.
“The notion that he might call up a Rangers player is pie-in-the-sky stuff.”
When Commons was off the subject of England he was far more complimentary.
“He [Kent] is now the main man at Rangers… Given the transfer saga surrounding Alfredo Morelos and the way he’s been in and out of the team, Kent has now moved past him in the pecking order.
“He’s the club’s best player. He’s not the same daft young boy who was throwing punches at Scott Brown… He’s now the one player Rangers dare not sell.”
Steven Gerrard spoke recently about calls for Kent to be called up to his national side, but he encouraged the winger to just ‘focus on Rangers‘, saying his international future will take care of itself.
Rangers have already turned down a bid from Leeds for the 23-year-old this transfer window and look determined to keep hold of him
A win against Galatasaray on Thursday could be absolutely critical here, though.
If Rangers win then we don’t see any way that Kent moves. However, a defeat will pile even more financial pressure on the club and a big offer between then and the Monday deadline could be a tough one to turn down if there’s no European football.
It’s important Rangers do, though. We think the season depends on Kent staying.
