‘That’ll cost us a title’ – Some Rangers fans criticise ‘terrible’ player in 5-1 win v M’well

Some Rangers fans have criticised George Edmundson, following his own goal in the dying stages of the Gers’ win over Motherwell.

Rangers beat Motherwell 5-1 in a convincing performance on Sunday afternoon, with goals coming via braces from James Tavernier and Cedric Itten, as well as a fine finish by Jordan Jones.

The only blemish on the afternoon for the Bears was a late own goal from George Edmundson – although it didn’t look as if there was a great deal the defender could have done to stop it, with the ball hitting him square in the face from a deflected Motherwell corner.

And bearing in mind the slight knick that it took at the front post, it’s hard to criticise Edmundson too much here.

The ball is travelling at quite a pace, and it would have taken a tremendous show of reflexes to get out of the way.

It’s made doubly unfortunate for the centre-back by the fact that he was only on the pitch for around 15 minutes, meaning that this was just about his only meaningful contribution.

Still, you can understand the frustration from some supporters, and a clean sheet would have been nice to cap off an emphatic display.

With Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, and Nikola Katic ahead of him in the pecking order, the last thing Edmundson needs is to be tarnishing to rare opportunities he is given.
