‘Want to keep him’ – Steven Gerrard offers major contract update on Rangers ace

Steven Gerrard has hinted he would be happy to offer Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor another contract at Ibrox.

The 38-year-old was brought into the side on Thursday and kept a clean-sheet in a 4-0 win over Willem II in the Europa League qualifiers.

McGregor has endured a slow start to the season with injuries and had lost his place to Jon McLaughlin at Ibrox, but Gerrard hasn’t forgotten his quality.

Gerrard insisted that although nothing is certain, the Bears will continue to monitor McGregor, and would love for him to stick around.

“We are all aware of his age but he is still rated and loved as much as he was when he was younger,” he told the Scotsman.

“We will take it month by month.

“Listen, if he is still in the same shape and he is still producing the same performances at the time that we need to discuss it, that will be a decision for Allan McGregor. But one thing is for sure, we will certainly want to keep him around the football club.”

McGregor grasped his chance with both hands on Thursday, with Gerrard claiming he had never seen a goalkeeper pick up the Man of the Match award in a 4-0 win.

The 38-year-old made a string of great saves, none better than his effort in the first half to prevent a certain goal with net waiting to be hit from only 10 yards out.

That save proved his quality, and that despite his veteran status, he can still do a job to great effect for Gerrard this season and beyond.

McLaughlin has had a great start to life at Ibrox too, and Gerrard will be delighted with the level of competition in his squad – long may it continue.
