Charlie Adam hits back at player claim by Rangers man, mentions potential PL switch

Charlie Adam has hit back at Gary McAllister’s claim that Rangers forward Ryan Kent is edging towards a call-up to the England squad.

Speaking in a press conference on Friday, ahead of the Light Blues’ trip to Motherwell on Sunday, assistant manager McAllister said that Kent “must be getting close” to emerging on Gareth Southgate’s radar [Daily Record].

Kent has lit up Ibrox with his performances in the opening stages of the new season by scoring five goals and supplying five assists in nine appearances across all competitions.

On Thursday night, the former Liverpool player scored, assisted one of Filip Helander’s goals and won a penalty as Rangers beat Willem II to progress to the Europa League play-off round.

Although he’s in top form, ex-Rangers midfielder Adam cannot agree that Kent is anywhere near the England squad, claiming that he would have to head to the Premier League for that to happen.

“It’s a little bit premature,” said Adam on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show on YouTube.

“Listen, the lad’s done really well since he’s come in.

“[He’s been] terrific but to get in that England squad is going to be extremely hard.

“I think he’d have to go to the Premier League to show his talents and then get an opportunity in the squad.”

It’s not as though Kent hasn’t been linked with a move to the Premier League with Leeds United tabling a bid to sign him earlier in the transfer window.

Steven Gerrard issued a “hands-off” warning to the Yorkshire club last month after an offer was “strongly rejected” [talkSPORT].

Leeds haven’t been back in for Kent since so Gerrard’s hard-line stance on Kent’s future seems to have worked – for now.

If Kent feels that he could play for England and wants to feature in Southgate’s plans, then he might end up making noise about potentially joining a club like Leeds.

We’re not saying that will happen – nor should it. But that’s simply a possibility that Rangers fans might need to prepare for.
