‘Biggest danger’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Alex McLeish warns Rangers amid potential ‘ongoing issue’

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that Kemar Roofe’s latest injury issue could be symptomatic of a bigger “danger” for Rangers this season.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss suggested that the disruption that the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has caused could lead to more risk of players picking up muscular problems as the campaign progresses.

Roofe picked up a calf complaint during the 5-0 Europa League win over Lincoln Red Imps recently, and looks set to be absent until after the international break next month.

And McLeish is concerned that the forward’s spell on the sidelines could be indicative of a broader pattern.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “If it’s an ongoing issue, then obviously that’s not good.

“It could just be a sign of the times, that players hare having to stop and start the season. I’ve said before that the biggest danger for a lot of teams will be keeping their players free from injury.

“They stopped last season in the middle of the season, they’ve started this one with a mini-preseason to get themselves back to a level, and I really think mentally and physically these are going to be really demanding times for footballers.

“I hope sincerely that it’s not an ongoing problem.”

Roofe has endured a number of injuries in recent seasons, including an ongoing ankle injury that limited him to just 16 appearances for Anderlecht last term.

So far, he has scored two goals in six appearances since arriving in Glasgow this summer.
