‘Unbelievable’ – Kevin Thomson raves about Rangers ace v Willem II, names teammate as ‘MOTM’
Former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson has heaped praise on Allan McGregor for his “unbelievable” display against Willem II on Thursday evening.
The Gers stopper pulled off a number of high profile saves as Steven Gerrard’s men ran out 4-0 winners to book themselves a place in the final qualification round for this season’s Europa League.
Despite the veteran keeper’s heroics, however, Thomson saw fit to name Ryan Kent as his man-of-the-match, while also suggesting that 35-year-old Steven Davis performed like a player ten years his junior.
Writing on his personal Twitter account after co-commentating on the match for Rangers TV, the ex-Ibrox talent said: “Brilliant performance, good to be on the coms with Tom Miller.
“Put me under pressure for MOTM though!
“Kent for me, but to a man anyone could have got it. Allan McGregor, unbelievable few saves, and Davo looks 25 again!”
How good were Rangers last night?
The scoreline says it all really.
Willem II are no Lincoln Red Imps, without being disrespectful to the Gibraltar champions, but Steven Gerrard’s men strolled past them with relative ease.
With the score already 2-0 at half-time, this was a fairly relaxed display from the Gers.
That being said, their hosts did register more possession and more shots on goal.
And that was where McGregor stepped in.
At 38, he is only a couple of years younger than his boss, and after a spell out of the side, you might have forgiven him for being a tad rusty.
Of course, Greegsy doesn’t operate like the rest of us mere mortals though, and the sharpness and ability he showed at times last night were a timely reminder of why he is such a hero at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have hit an impasse in talks to sign this £4million-rated ace.
