‘Outstanding’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Alex McLeish hails Rangers ace who started in 4-0 v Willem II

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has hailed James Tavernier for his “outstanding” performances in recent weeks for Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss referenced some of the criticism that the skipper has come in for in recent times, but suggested that taking it on board has helped him to grow as a player.

Tavernier opened the scoring in his side’s 4-0 win over Willem II on Thursday evening, netting his 50th goal for the Glaswegian giants in the process.

And McLeish believes that we’re starting to see the best from the 28-year-old once more.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s all part of the process [receiving criticism].

“It also makes you stronger. Whether he takes it on board, I’m not sure – the social network is so vast that you can’t read everything.

“But I’m sure the constructive criticism will have helped to put James back on the right mental side of things.

“He’s been outstanding, his performances over the past few weeks.”

Tavernier’s penalty against Willem II represented his fourth goal of the season, having previously netted against Hamilton, Dundee United, and Lincoln Red Imps.

The right-back scored just three goals over the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign, and was criticised by the likes of Kenny Miller for comments he made suggesting that the Gers lacked the necessary bottle to go all the way in a title race.
