‘Icing on the cake’ – Ally McCoist responds three-word Insta message from Rangers boss Gerrard

Ally McCoist has taken to Instagram to respond to a birthday message from Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

The Ibrox legend celebrated his 58th on Thursday, and was treated to a comprehensive 4-0 Europa League victory from the Gers as they strolled past Dutch outfit Willem II.

A mouth-watering clash against Galatasaray awaits, but in the meantime, McCoist was overjoyed to celebrate his big day with a win.

Writing on his personal account, he posted a photograph alongside the caption: “Couldn’t have asked for a better day – fun and games with the talkSPORT team in the morning, quality time with the family including a brilliant birthday feed, then to top it all off Steven and the team doing the business (and then some!) in the Netherlands.

“Perfect from start to finish.”

Responding to that post, Gerrard wrote: “Happy birthday mate”, to which McCoist replied: “Thanks mate.

“Had a great day and you boys put the icing on the cake.”

What a present for Ally…

There are certainly worse ways to top off your big day than watching the Gers produce some European magic.

This kind of confident display on the continent is becoming a hallmark of Gerrard’s tenure, and if we can pull out another next week against Galatasaray then we will take a well-deserved spot in the Europa League for another season.

The Turkish side won’t be an easy challenge to overcome, and currently lead their domestic league after two matches.

But Rangers shone brightly last night, and will be fully aware of how important it is to secure European football this term.

Some fans may argue that the Europa League would be an unnecessary distraction as we bid to prevent a dreaded ten-in-a-row domestically, but the fact is that the competition provides us with a major revenue boost.

As per The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell, it made up over 25% over the Gers’ revenue last term.

Not having that income would be a serious blow.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have hit an impasse in talks to sign this £4million-rated ace.
